December 01, 2005
Sony announced on November 30 that global PlayStation 2 shipments exceeded the 100 million mark on November 29. It took the company five years and nine months to reach this level since the game console was introduced in March 2000, breaking the record of nine years and six months set by the original PlayStation. Looking at shipments by destination, Kyodo news reports that 22.22 million units were shipped in Asia, including Japan, 40.65 million units in North America, and 37.14 million in Europe. The original PlayStation is still in first place in terms of total accumulated shipments with 102.49 million units. Nintendo's Gameboy leads the way among portable game consoles with a total of 118.69 million units.
